Time in Film. Comparison of the Conception of Jan Mukařovský and Gilles Deleuze

The topic of my diploma thesis is a comparison of speculation about a film from two perspectives. Firstly, it deals with the approach of Jan Mukařovský, a Czech structuralist, who was one of the first in the Czech context to explore the time concept in a film. Secondly, it considers the approach of Gillese Deleuze, who was accredited with the new view on the time-image in a film, however, much later than Jan Mukařovský. The aim of the paper is to explain the way the approaches of Mukařovský and Deluze relate to other approaches of thinking about time in films, the influence of other concepts of their time that they both theoretically based their views on, as well as specifying the films that became the starting points of exploring the time in films. The method of comparison is divided into three aspects, as three comparison levels.
Karel Teige, Jan Mukařovský and Bohuslav Brouk as Theorists of Surrealism

The content of the thesis is the surrealistic object and its reflection among the czech theorists. The first part of the thesis describes the problematic of surrealistic object and subject-objective relations in surrealism. Breton's philosophical approach is introduced, as well as his concept of object's crisis. The first part also outlines the meaning of found object, concept of convulsive beauty and Dali's paranoic-critical method as a source of surrealistic imagery. The second part of the thesis is focused on the reflection of surrealistic object presentation and on relations between arts and reality according to the concepts of Jan Mukařovský. The third part of the thesis is dedicated to conceptualization of aesthetics of Bohuslav Brouk in the light of surrealism. In this part the scope of Brouk's understanding of subject-objective relations is briefly described, as well his interpretation of surrealistic object.The last part of the thesis outlines the Teige's conception of surrealistic work in the terms of the sources of surrealistic imagination.
The Role of an Author in a Work of Art Based on Jan Mukařovský Focused on a Film

In my thesis, I focus on the role of an author in a work of art, and film in particular, based on Jan Mukařovský. Firstly, I describe Mukařovský's structuralist concept of an art work. Thus, following Ferdinand de Saussure's ideas, he views a work of art as an autonomous sign. At the same time, he uses de Saussure's terms langue and parole. In this text, I explain Mukařovský's terms of an aesthetic function, a norm and a value. I also examine the difference between an individual and a subject of art, and between intentionality and unintentionality. I compare Mukařovský's view of the author with other theorists, namely, Umberto Eco, Roland Barthes and Michael Foucault. Hence, I show historical changes within the concept of the author, and also explain Pierre Levy's cyber-cultural understanding of it. In addition, I discuss other authors, who bring together film arts and the interplay of signs. In particular, I introduce James Monaco and Jerzy Plaževski, and connect their thoughts with ideas of Mukařovský. These authors create a bridge between the concept of a film author and Mukařovský, who does not discuss this authorship in particular. The drama "Yoshitsune and the thousand cherry trees." Minamoto No Yoshitsune as a martial strategist, courtier and literary myth.

In her doctoral thesis the author would like to present the play Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry trees (Yoshitsune senbonzakura) as a unique piece of Japanese drama which has a great complexity and an outstanding place within the corpus of Japanese literature. Even if the play can be compared to Chushingura mono in its importance, Yoshitsune senbonzakura has not been widely translated to western languages. There are two exceptions, however: the English translation (Jones, Jr. 1993) and the German translation (Klopfenstein 1982). While comparing the two translations and using the most full original texts available (as preserved in Takeda Izumo and Namiki Sosuke Joruri Collection and Yuda Yoshio's Bunraku Joruri Collection), the author's goal is to present the play to Czech readers and its interpretation to Czech scholars. As for the flow and structure of the interpretation of Yoshitsune senbonzakura the author begins with an analysis of the historical background of the legend of Minamoto Yoshitsune, capturing the life of Yoshitsune from the time of Heiji rebellion (1159) when he was born to his death in 1189. The Entry "Fashion" in Czech Encyklopedias

The thesis "Entry "Fashion" in Czech Encyclopedias" analyses an evolution of aesthetic viewpoint of the entry "fashion" since its first appearance (the first Encyclopedia in Czech language from 1866) until recently (the Entry Fashion in 2001). The thesis research method is based on Jan Mukařovský's theory of function, value and norm of the aesthetics and his commentaries on fashion, which I made a subset to my own term aesthetic viewpoint. For better orientation I first decided to summarize particular analyses of each entry into a spreadsheet which makes development, way of characterisation and terminological variability of aesthetic viewpoint apparent in a more complete way. The main goal is to answer the following reasearch questions: 1. Do authors distinguish between fashion as a norm and fashion as a form of clothing? 2. Which terms are being used to thematize the aesthetic viewpoint? 3. What is the context of the aesthetic viewpoint of fashion?

A Concept of Beaty in Jan Mukařovský's and Sptephen Coburn Pepper's Writings

The notion of beauty in the twentieth century went through crisis, also in consideration of development of art. It was either completely abandoned, heavily narrowed or extensively widened. The bachelor thesis deals with a survey of the nature and the reason of these changes in the work of two significant aestheticians: Jan Mukařovský and Stephen Coburn Pepper. The base of the thesis lies in comparison of both concepts of beauty.

This bachelor thesis called Reception of the work of Ferdinand de Saussure in the literary criticism of the Prague linguistic circle deals with F. de Saussure's basic linguistic thesis and their acceptance in Prague linguistic circle. The thesis is divided into two parts: the first one explains the most important terms of F. de Saussure, the second one focuses on searching these terms in works of Roman Jakobson and Jan Mukařovský. The aim of this bachelor thesis is an analysis of the attitudes of R. Jakobson and J. Mukařovský to F. de Saussure's text - Course in General Linguistics - particularly in connection with application of some thesis to work of art.

The Role of a Text in Dramatic Art.

The present BA thesis focuses on the role and the nature of a text in dramatic Arts and the relation of a dramatic text and a theater performance. Its aim is to demonstrate the place of dramatic text in the structure of dramatic Arts and important meaning of stage directions. The method of comparison is used in this BA thesis to introduce dramatic Arts in the context of czech aesthetics and semiotics of theater.
